Social Studies
There are five units of study. Some are longer and take up the whole nine weeks (a marking period), while others are shorter and are combined within a nine week period.
Our Government
We start out small and learn about the city government, then the state and finally the United States. The students compare and contrast between the governments and relate them to real life and how they help us to function in our daily lives.
Earth
This overlaps a bit with our science curriculum and the functions of land, water and map usage are taught.
Flat Stanley
This is the most loved unit as we read and do many projects with our friend Flat Stanley including putting together a journal and sending Flat Stanley to spend some time with a friend or relative. When Flat Stanley returns the students have time to share his adventures with the class. While our flat friends are away the class is learning about all the places they have gone.
People
Noticing the different cultures around the world while comparing and contrasting.
Past and Present
Throughout our community there are some great people from the past and present that we study. The students are excited to learn that there is a museum in our city that used to stand right where our school is located today!
